BACKGROUND

After starting to learn the piano at eight, I took up the guitar at
sixteen
and soon started to write songs.

I began home-recording these in the 80's and was kindly given
a session at a professional studio in 2009 by my brother Nick and
recorded nine songs in a day.

I had the opportunity to do a lunchtime concert at the
Conoco Rooms in Louth, 2015, with friend and
professional fiddle player Bill Benham.

We started off with two of my songs and Bill followed with
a Bach Partita. Between each movement I continued with two
more songs etc..
We finished with a rendition of Tambourine Man.

Playing with a professional musician like Bill, who was in the
LSO by the age of 22, was a great honor and confidence
booster. Many thanks to him.

" Wow Steve and Bill, you were absolutely amazing.
I am so pleased I was able to make your concert...

completely took my breath away with your
spellbinding, beautiful performance "  ~ Diane

" I love the gentle folksy mood he creates with his voice
and guitar; some lively Dylanesque harmonica playing
too "  ~ Kate

In 2021 I released an album of my songs, SONGBOOK,
on Spotify etc... t
ype Erling Burgess into search....

and my
latest album THE HISTORY OF A SONG was
released in June 2024.

" Just got round to listening to your album, it's a
delight, thanks " ~ Pete

I also have an album of piano improvisations
called SLEEPYHEAD, released in 2015... and there is a
playlist of POETRY and the Rookery Rag...

Lastly, I have just released six new songs - see below...

Drawing With Light
black and white photography, with commentary
ISBN 978 1 9996252 1 4

Life.Time.Love is an A5 sized book of poetry and pictures
made with a bespoke birch ply cover.
The project took shape after I spoke to my friend Guy Weston
who is a bookbinder.
He kindly explained the basics of how to set out the pages
and sections of a book

I then had the opportunity to attend one of Glen Malkin's
excellent weekend bookbinding courses at Hull City Library.
From learning the basics, I went on to develop my
own cover, purposely simple in its design

It contains 42 plates printed on 176 gsm quality paper,
using Epson's latest pigment based inks and printer.
I see and sell it as a limited edition 'art object',
containing a full range of my poetry from 1968 to-date

The flexible wood cover has a beautiful grain pattern and
nice feel to it, along with the leather... the smell right up
there with freshly baked bread and coffee!

Incidentally, Guy requested two copies of the book to bind
himself, which I was very happy to oblige.
The following slides give a taster and brief look
into the book...

" I have now read Life Time Love, I shall return to it
again and again. It sings out with love of the Divine;
truly an inspiring creation "  ~ Mark

Drawing With Light was born out of my first book and
follows a similar format - picture and text.

I was influenced as a student by Bernard Rudofsky's
wonderful exhibition and book 'Architecture Without Architects'
from the late sixties - black and white photography
accompanied by succinct and interesting texts.

I wanted to express my passion for the subject in an
original format, with the idea of literally holding a
mini exhibition in your hands...

You might be looking at this on your smartphone, which
I am naturally pleased about... what a book gives in addition
is a physical feeling and presence - a tactile experience.
You can put it away and take it out as you please,
without electricity! I hope it has a 'big book' feel to it.
